Condo fires - a quarterly look
From early October until the end of 2007, I collected news stories on 80 fires in condominiums around the country. They ranged from the ridiculous - a woman decides to cook bacon in the microwave and then leaves on an errand - to the usual - space heaters, cigarettes, irons left on, etc. But the constant in all condo fires is that damage almost always extends to other people's units, in many cases burning down entire buildings or multiple buildings. Families are displaced, insurance companies argue over who's responsible for what, and the association begins a miserable year.
When I started the Fire news feed, it was because I felt that condo fires were becoming too regular an occurrence, and that boards were doing very little to educate their owners in fire safety issues inside their units, or in taking steps to improve fire prevention. (As a reminder, there are dozens of articles that can downloaded and re-printed at the National Fire Protection Association web site).
Help your association get through 2008 without the pain and aggravation of dealing with an easily preventable fire.
